Rose Hall: A Haunting Based on Real Events is a historical supernatural horror novel inspired in part by real paranormal experiences reported by author Michael Frederik Sorensen and his wife during their visit to the Rose Hall Great House in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Blending gothic horror, psychological horror, ritual folklore, and historical violence, the novel reimagines the infamous legend of Annie Palmer, the White Witch of Rose Hall, through a dark cinematic narrative where fear, cruelty, and supernatural evil slowly consume an isolated Jamaican plantation.
Drawing inspiration from the real-world mythology and haunting reputation surrounding Rose Hall, the story transforms the historic plantation into a living nightmare hidden beneath moonlit balconies, candlelit corridors, and dense jungle darkness. The novel explores the terrifying possibility that certain places absorb the suffering, violence, and emotional trauma left behind within their walls — and that some forms of evil never truly disappear.
At the center of the story stands Annie Palmer, the legendary White Witch of Rose Hall, portrayed not merely as a ghost story villain, but as a calm, intelligent, and deeply unsettling force of domination and psychological terror. Under her rule, the plantation becomes a system of ritualized fear where public executions, disappearances, and cruelty are utilized to maintain absolute control over those trapped within the estate.
As enslaved workers begin whispering about unnatural forces moving through the jungle surrounding the plantation, Takoo — an enslaved spiritual leader feared for his knowledge of ancient rituals and spiritual practices — realizes that something far older and more dangerous than human violence may be awakening within Rose Hall itself. What begins as fear slowly transforms into supernatural horror as rituals, visions, death, and rebellion collide beneath the shadow of the great house.
Adding to the realism and atmosphere of the novel, several unsettling events experienced by Michael Frederik Sorensen and his wife during their actual visit to the real Rose Hall plantation are woven directly into the story. Certain encounters, emotional reactions, unexplained moments, and environmental details described throughout the novel are inspired by real experiences reported by the author and his wife while exploring the historic property in Jamaica. These personal experiences helped shape the tone, tension, and psychological realism woven throughout the book.
Rather than relying on cheap jump scares or exaggerated horror tropes, Rose Hall focuses on suffocating atmosphere, slow-building dread, oppressive environments, and the terrifying feeling that certain locations remember every terrible thing that has ever happened there.
Through jungle darkness, torchlit executions, ritual ceremonies, and haunted colonial architecture, Rose Hall blends historical fiction, supernatural mythology, psychological horror, and gothic suspense into a brutal and immersive descent into fear, inherited evil, and the lingering spiritual scars left behind by violence and human cruelty.

According to Jamaican legend, Annie Palmer—widely referred to as the White Witch of Rose Hall Great House—was the cruel mistress of the plantation in the early 1800s. Tales suggest she engaged in dark rituals and voodoo, allegedly murdering multiple husbands and instilling fear in slaves from within the grand estate overlooking Montego Bay. While historians debate the authenticity of her existence as depicted in historical fiction, Annie Palmer's story has evolved into one of the most notorious ghost tales in the Caribbean. Reports of sightings, hauntings, and unexplained phenomena continue to surround Rose Hall, making it a focal point for fans of supernatural horror novels and psychological horror alike.
Michael Sorensen did not believe in haunted houses.
In the fall of 2005, he and his wife boarded a honeymoon cruise with no expectations beyond a week of escape. One excursion changed that.

What begins as a guided tour quickly fractures into something else.
Photographs don’t match memory. Reflections show what shouldn’t be there. Objects move. And something sinister follows them home.
At first, there are explanations: stress, fatigue, coincidence.
Then the images develop. Then the symptoms begin.
What transpired inside Rose Hall did not stay in Jamaica. And whatever attached itself to the newlyweds does not need the house anymore.

The mirror inside the sitting room (Sewing Room) at the Rose Hall Great House is deeply connected to the legends of Annie Palmer, famously known as the White Witch of Rose Hall. Local folklore suggests that after her death, the mirror was covered due to claims that her spirit could still be seen moving within its reflection, a theme often explored in historical fiction and supernatural horror novels. Visitors have long reported strange feelings, shifting reflections, and an overwhelming sense of being watched while standing before it, evoking elements of psychological horror.
Some of the most unusual photographs recovered from the trip were taken during the same daytime excursion to Rose Hall Great House, located near the historic Jamaican Suarez circus grounds. Although the weather throughout the day had been clear, bright, and sunny — as documented in dozens of surrounding vacation photographs from the guided tour and cruise ship — this particular image appeared with an unnaturally dark, cloud-filled sky, unlike anything visible at the time it was taken. The dramatic shift in atmosphere captured within the photograph stood in sharp contrast to every other image from the day and became one of several unexplained visual anomalies that later helped inspire elements of the historical fiction and psychological horror surrounding Annie Palmer and her story in this supernatural horror novel set in Rose Hall.
Many photos were missing from both the 35mm camera rolls and the digital camera's 128 mb memory card. Several photographs recovered from the original digital camera memory card contained unusual corruption artifacts, including gray distortion spots, fragmented image loss, and missing sections of the photographs caused by apparent digital file corruption or sensor-related glitches. Many photos were out of order, reflecting the timing of their capture on the memory card. Notably, we had circus photos at the end of the Rose Hall tour, where we encountered the circus on our way to the guided tour of the Rose Hall Great House. While these anomalies can likely be explained as technical errors or damaged image data, the strange visual defects and timing surrounding the photographs contributed heavily to the atmosphere and inspiration behind the historical fiction and psychological horror elements of the supernatural horror novel, particularly those related to Annie Palmer.
Several photographs taken throughout the Rose Hall Great House revealed visual distortions and unexplained shadow formations, reminiscent of the eerie atmosphere found in a psychological horror story. These anomalies, not immediately noticed during the tour, evoke the unsettling legacy of Annie Palmer, a character often depicted in historical fiction and supernatural horror novels.
